Cavachon and Cavapoo Puppies: Which is best A Cavachon or Cavapoo
Hi, my name is Sharon. Together with Carlene, we are the proud owners of Cavalier Love Utah and Cavachon Love, breeding excellence for you to select when you are deciding between a Cavachon and Cavapoo Puppy. We are professional and ethical breeders of Cavaliers, f1 Cavachons, and f1 Cavapoo puppies. Over the past 20 years, our adoptive families have asked almost every question imaginable. In the upcoming weeks I am going to discuss several of these questions. Lets start with:
What is the difference between a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, a Cavapoo, and a Cavachon and what breed do you think would be the best fit for our family? Which is best Cavapoo or Cavachon?
Choosing the correct breed is one of the most important decision you make during your adoption journey. Cavaliers, Cavapoos and Cavachons, when bred correctly, are perfect companions; loving, loyal and devoted to each member of your family. There are some differences to pay attention to as well.
Cavaliers, unlike F1 Cavapoo’s and F1 Cavachons, are not hypoallergenic, they shed. Cavaliers, classified as moderate shedders, are much like humans, their hair falls out when the follicle dies. Frequent brushing helps. Cavaliers do not blow their coats, they do not rapidly shed in order to acclimate to rising, seasonal temperatures. Note, food quality matters! The better the food, the healthier the skin and hair, resulting in less shedding.
Every breed requires different levels of grooming. Cavapoos and Cavachons, in addition to regular brushing at home, require haircuts every 4-6 weeks. Cavaliers, in comparison, do not require regular trips to the groomer. The Cavalier standard is the natural appearance of the breed, the coat is unaltered.Cavaliers are a bath and brush dog. This allows the coat to grow out in order to show off their gorgeous long ears, feathering on the chest, tail, feet and legs.
*It is recommended that hair on the pads of Cavalier‘s feet be kept short, allowing traction from the pads.
Of course, people do groom their Cavaliers, it is absolutely a personal preference. I bathe, brush and blow dry my Cavaliers, maintaining the iconic, regal standard of the breed. Benefit: This saves me quite a bit of travel time and money; each grooming can be $60-$100+.
Cavaliers go with the flow, they are companion dogs, it is in their DNA. This is true for Bichons as well. Bichons and Cavaliers have very similar temperaments. Cavaliers and Cavachons love walks, short runs, hiking, and agility work. However, their real desire, is to be with you, keeping you company, no matter what you are doing. If there are days where you cannot make time for that walk, Cavaliers and Cavachons remain content to just hang out, keep you company, snuggle, all the while not going stir crazy.
Note, I am biased. Cavaliers are my favorite! But, if I were to add a hypoallergenic puppy to the family, I would select a Cavachon. That being said, I base this choice on what would work best with my personality, schedule, and family dynamics.
For those of you who want a little more pep and playfulness in your pup, an f1 Cavapoo might be a perfect match.
Cavapoos are also fantastic companions. Cavapoo‘s temperament and personality often differs from the Cavalier and Cavachon. In f1 Cavapoo puppies, 50% of their DNA comes from Poodles. For centuries,Poodles have been bred for their energy, intelligence, as well as their love of sports and hunting.
Today, poodles are family pets, however, that does not change their DNA. My experience has been that f1 Cavapoos come with a bit more zip and spunk. In comparison to the easy going, Cavalier & Cavachon, Cavapoos have more energy, requiring more exercise, play, and roughhousing sessions. Yes, Cavapoos love to snuggle, but you may need to wear them out beforehand. Cavapoos are also more likely to inherent vocal traits (barking), commonly found in poodles. If your Cavapoo does bark, this is something that can be corrected with proper training.
Size does matter. Our Cavaliers, as adults, are 13-18 pounds. When breeding our Cavalier females with our 5 pound poodle or 9 pound Bichon sires, resulting Cavapoos and Cavachons range between 7-13 pound, full grown. Here are some questions to consider when selecting the right size for you. What size of dog are you going to be the most comfortable with? How much weight can you physically lift? Do you travel, and would a smaller dog be a better fit as a travel companion? Would a smaller dog be at a greater risk of injury due to the age of children in your home?
When it comes down to it, everyone needs to do a thorough evaluation of themselves, lifestyle, and personal preferences when selecting which breed of puppy to adopt. Ask yourself:
What is your personality like? What is your family dynamic? What stage of life are you in, or will you enter into over the next 12-15 years? Is non-shedding a must for you? Do you have the time and finances to take a dog to the groomers? What is the ultimate goal you wish to achieve by adding a puppy to your family? Do you have health concerns to consider when selecting a breed? Do you have pet allergies? What is your home like, structurally? Do I have a yard? How much time do I spend away from home?
Select a breeder that intimately knows their puppies, via endless hours of interaction, socialization and evaluation. Make sure that your breeder is willing to invest time to listen and understand what you want and need. Discuss with your breeder the particulars of your life that require consideration when selecting a puppy. We are those breeders and together, we will help you select the perfect Cavalier, Cavachon, or Cavapoo to add to your forever family
